The Government said today that it will sell part of its stake in British Energy which could raise up to £3.5 billion. Trade Secretary Alistair Darling said in a statement this morning that the sale would be made through the capital markets.

British Energy shares eased 4.5p to 692.5p following the announcement.
British Energy was privatised in 1996, but ran into trouble in 2002 when electricity prices slumped. It had to be bailed out by the government with a £5 billion refinancing package. The group relisted in January last year and electricity prices have since rocketed.
