EURO LOTTERY

I hope the new lottery game announced on April 20 is successful in its efforts to raise money for good causes. However, the launch has recycled some myths around the National Lottery which so far has raised more than £18 billion for more than 230,000 good-cause projects. It is not true that a mountain rescue team was turned down for a grant because they did not rescue enough ethnic minorities and St Paul’s Cathedral was not turned down for a lottery grant. Neither is it the case that only 5.6p in the pound goes to charities. Of each £1 ticket 28p goes to good causes. Far more than 5.6p goes to charities. Much also goes to good causes such as museums, which although not always constituted as charities, are achieving charitable purposes.
