More Gas Price rises by the Major Suppliers

The price of wholesale gas in the UK surged a further 50p per therm to a record 255p a therm today, prompting one industry leader to say that British fuel supplies were facing "the crunch".
Continuing cold weather has boosted demand and the closure of the country’s biggest storage site squeezed supply, prompting further fears that business and industry may have their fuel supplies rationed.
The latest rise follows a threefold increase in the price yesterday after National Grid issued a warning that the country was in danger of not having enough gas to meet demand.
NPower announced today that its electricity and gas prices will rise by an average of up to 15 per cent. In common with other energy suppliers who have recently raised their prices, such as British Gas and Powergen, the company, which has 6 million domestic customers, blamed rising wholesale prices.
"These changes follow massive increases in the cost of wholesale gas, which has trebled in price since 2003," Kevin Miles, nPower's managing director, said.
In January, nPower increased its prices by 13.6 per cent (for electricity) and 14.5 per cent (for gas).
